biggrin.gif Rodaria Taverna in Georgioupolis is a lovely place and cheap for staying too. Nikos and his family offer lovely self catering apartments for 35euros a day for 2 people or 25euros a day for 1 person.
We got to Georgioupolis early in morning, as we had taken the overnight ferry from Pireaus to Rethymnon with Anek lines, which are superb and cheap.
After arriving Nikos greeted us warmly and showed us to the apartment. It was lovely with a balcony with superb mountain views.
The Taverna restaurant at the front that Nikos and his family own, serves superb food. You can sit and watch and watch the world go by. The family are warm and friendly and grandad was a star; although my greek is a little sparse he chatted away to me like I was an old family friend
Georgioupolis is a wonderful place to stay it has everything My husband would go in mornings to bakery and local shop and get the breakfast and we sit and chill out.
An excellent bar is Titos in the square. The boys are so much fun and make you feel at ease. The whole of Georgioupolis has a relaxing yet warm and friendly atmosphere, there is nothing like a Greek welcome and the hospitality was genuine, the food was cheap but beware of the home made Raki. We spent an evening at mama's place, opposite the Rodaria, and I was talking in German when I left seems my german is fine when I am worse for ware lol laugh.gif
The best thing to do is hire a car and fill the tank get in and just drive. The scenery is amazing and we stopped in many different places and spent lovely times with the locals.
Unlike most places, the true Crete people welcome you with open arms. They are not after your money, they give friendship and a lasting memory of a wonderful Island

10 out of 10 for the apartment
10 out of 10 for the cleanliness
10 out of 10 for the hospitality
10 out of 10 for the food

Packing is not funny at all! Everything you need in-case-of or good-to-have, is almost filling the suitcase to it’s utmost limits. Then it’s time for the necessities and whoops it’s chock-full.

We will get up with the lark, 03.15, to be at the airport two hours before take-off. Yes, yes, that’s the charter’s standards! Cheap one-way tickets were book last year in November.

Smoothly the pilot strokes the runway at Chanias airport almost on time. I’ve been thinking why some people applaud at landing. Maybe they are surprised that the pilot is so clever that he manages to land the heavy aeroplane? The alternative, some crashes here and there, seems to me like a very bad alternative (!) For me it’s a matter of course that the pilot always will succeed to make a safe landing!

The familiar smell of paraffin oil when we finally get off the plan is familiar and like perfume, when we squinting step outside into the bright Mediterranean sunshine.

The suitcases arrive after some, quite long, Cretan time, and of course not on the band marked with our flight number. This is the Cretan standard!

Our Nikos wasn’t able this time to pick us up. Georgos the taxi driver was his stand in. He has been taken us many times from the airport.

We are smiling happily when we take the main road towards the PARADISE. We see the familiar views passing by the car windows, the sea, the mountains and the vegetation. We both sigh from happiness.

It’s a wonderful reunion as always. It’s lovely to meet our Cretan family again! The boys always get their chocolate boxes. It,s now a tradition to bring Swedish chocolate to the kids although they now are grown up men.

We get help from Vangelis to carry the suitcases upstairs to our room, number 7. “Seven is heaven”. We always stay in room number 7. Pathetic? Not at all, it’s the best one. Now you know! In the refrigerator we find fresh eggs and tomatoes. Mother Rodaria has also made some biscuits. As usual we are moved by her considerateness. Wow, now we have two long weeks of holidays. It feels endless…

We spend the days together with good friends from Scandinavia, long walks along the beach, sunbathing and swimming. At the beach bar with the fashionable name of Sun Kiss we often have lunch accompanied by a chilled Mythos beer, our toes hidden in the cool sand. The sun just keeps shining day after day from a clear blue sky!

The fashionable Sun Kiss

Many afternoons we see Nikos our dear friend drinking a frappé having discussions about life and the future in general. We often compare the differences in culture between our countries. We discuss taxes, schools, health care traffic rules (!) and a lot of other topics. Nikos is one years younger than our youngest daughter and in spite of the difference in ages we have, during the years, had many many frappes together!

The most important evening activity is dinner. Every night there is Preparation, Choice of restaurant and food and Enjoyment. A delicate Mossaka, Stifado, Kleftiko, Pastitio or Paputsakia and of course Retsina wine. That is the culmination of a wonderful evening!

Enjoyment is waiting!

Well two weeks are not endless. It’s just two paltry weeks. Time is running like sand between your fingers. It is time to say goodbye again. The familiar views will also this time pass by the car windows, this time we sigh because we are sad. The holiday in Paradise is over for this time. Vi have not made any grand achievements, not been running across the island, not looking at the old culture. Vi have just BEEN this time – and you bet, IT WAS JUST LOVELY!

Here is a JUST BEEING guy!
