Georgioupolis is a village on the Greek island of Crete. Located 43 kilometers east of Chania, about 22 km west of Rethymno and about 100 km west of Heraklion in the Apokoronas.
Georgioupolis is located at the top of the bay Almyros in sea area of Crete, with Cape Drapano and rocky coast to the north, and long sandy beaches to the east, just 20 km away from Rethymnon.
Three rivers in the village end up inthe sea. The largest, the Almyros creates a small harbour for small fishing and tourist boats. The entrance to the village from the old national road from Vrises is a large road with eucalyptus trees.
Formerly a small fishing village, Georgioupolis is a tourist town now, with many cafes, restaurants and small hotels and apartment complexes. The square is surrounded by outdoor seats used by tourists to enjoy drinks and ice creams. The 9 km beach is the main advantage of the area, the beach "Kalyvaki" located on the other side of the river.
Lake Kournas which is very near, is a popular excursion on foot, bicycle or tourist "tain". Georgioupolis is a good base for exploring the traditional area of Vamos directing yourself south of the White Mountains.
